Manufactured: c.1884-1889, discontinued in the Buchanan Bromley & Co. Cat., 1889;
the 1889 Scovill and Adams Catalog only advertised the #601.
Construction: back focus via
push-pull; single swing; reversing by patent tripod reverser
Materials: quarter-sawn sycamore
body, cherry base; black fabric
bellows; brass hardware;
Sizes Offered: #601=4.25x5.5; #601A=4.25x6.5; #602=5x8
(photos above); #603=6.5x8.5 (photo
below)
Notes: has folding bed, thumbscrew on top of body for swing;
outfit included tripod, Waterbury lens w/ insertable stops, and wooden case.
The tripod included the "Lightning Reverser" top, since the camera had no
provision for reversing. The distinctive quarter-sawn
sycamore is used for the body and a thick veneer on the front. The nickel-plated Waterbury lens
has a fixed aperture rather than the insertable stops usually found in inexpensive
Scovills (e.g., the Putnam Marvel). The box above
is apparently a home made shipping container, whereas the
normal wooden case is shown below.
